The problem

IT Directors and Facilities Managers face numerous threats to their businesses over the coming years.

Three major problems:

The first is Government Regulation, the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) becomes law in April 2010 and compels certain commercial bodies to monitor and report energy consumption and carbon emissions and then take steps to reduce both.

There are also certain sections of the Climate Change act and the Companies’ act that will require greater reporting of energy consumption and carbon emissions.

These 3 Acts are just the tip of the iceberg, there are many sections contained within other recently enacted legislation that will change the way companies do business within the EU.

The second is the impending energy gap, this period, forecasted to commence in 2015, and envisaged to last approximately 5-7 years is a shortage of electrical power for industry, largely as a result of a lack of power planning from central government and the power generators.

The gap arises due to the decommissioning of some nuclear power stations, restrictions on operating hours for coal fired units (due to the Large Combustion Directive) and delays in planning for Off/On Shore Wind and other renewable energy technologies. Whilst the Government has taken certain measures to alleviate the problem it is likely that from 2015 energy rationing will take place.

The third is that energy is almost certain to become more expensive, partly due to the shortage of energy and the costs of building new plant and transmission systems to connect to renewable energy plants.
